Vegan Drinks

Vegan drinks are beverages produced without any animal-derived ingredients or processing aids, including milk, egg, honey, isinglass, gelatin, and beeswax. In the zero-proof category, vegan certification is increasingly important as the plant-based consumer demographic significantly overlaps with zero-proof product purchasers.

Vegan certification in beverages requires verification of the entire production chain: raw ingredients (avoiding honey, milk lactose, casein, egg-derived compounds), processing aids (avoiding isinglass, gelatin, egg white, and casein-based fining agents), filtration media (avoiding diatomaceous earth contaminated with shellfish, animal-derived filter sheets), packaging (avoiding beeswax capsule coatings, casein-based label adhesives in some cases), and equipment cleaning (avoiding certain animal-derived cleaning agents).

For zero-proof beverages, vegan qualification is generally easier than for conventional wine or beer, because many NA beverages are inherently plant-based. Kombucha (brewed from tea, sugar, and SCOBY), water kefir (sugar water and tibicos), hop water (hops and water), and most botanical soft drinks have no natural non-vegan ingredients. The compliance challenges arise primarily in fining and filtration steps — particularly for dealcoholized wine.

The commercial rationale for vegan certification in zero-proof: IPSOS data shows that 43% of European zero-proof beverage consumers identify as flexitarian, vegan, or vegetarian — significantly higher than the general population (approximately 15%). This demographic overlap means that vegan certification addresses a majority of the core zero-proof customer base rather than a niche. For a small additional certification investment, the commercial benefit in consumer trust and category alignment is substantial.

An emerging certification convergence: several premium zero-proof brands now hold simultaneously organic, biodynamic, and vegan certifications — creating a 'clean label trifecta' that signals maximum value alignment with health-conscious, ethically motivated consumers. While each individual certification has value, the combination creates a premium positioning that is difficult to imitate without genuine production commitment.
