Beta-Caryophyllene

Beta-caryophyllene is a bicyclic sesquiterpene found in black pepper, cloves, hops, cannabis, and many botanical ingredients, known for its spicy, woody, clove-like aroma and its unique status as a dietary cannabinoid that activates CB2 receptors without psychoactive effects.

Beta-caryophyllene (BCP) is remarkable among plant terpenes for being one of only two terpenes known to act as a dietary cannabinoid — it selectively activates CB2 receptors (found primarily in immune tissue and the peripheral nervous system) without binding to CB1 receptors (the psychoactive pathway). This makes BCP technically a cannabinoid, but one that produces no intoxication, occurs naturally in common spices, and is GRAS-approved as a food ingredient. In beverage aroma, BCP contributes warmth and spice without the heat of capsaicin — it is responsible for much of the complex warmth in black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon-forward botanical blends.
