BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration)

Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is the measurement of ethanol in the bloodstream, expressed as grams of alcohol per 100ml of blood (g/dL) or as a percentage. It is the primary metric used by law enforcement and medicine to determine intoxication levels.

BAC rises after alcohol consumption as ethanol is absorbed through the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream. At 0.08% BAC — the legal driving limit in most US states and many countries — cognitive impairment, slowed reaction time, and reduced coordination are measurable. At 0.15% BAC, motor control is severely impaired; at 0.30–0.40%, loss of consciousness and respiratory depression can occur.

For zero-proof beverage consumers, BAC is relevant because even trace alcohol in a 0.5% ABV product can theoretically contribute a negligible rise in BAC, though research shows that a person would need to consume an implausible volume of 0.5% beverages for any measurable BAC change. Studies by German researchers have found that drinking up to 1.5 liters of 0.5% beer produces no detectable BAC increase, as the liver metabolizes this quantity of ethanol faster than it is absorbed.

In clinical settings, BAC is also used to assess alcohol use disorder, guide treatment protocols, and monitor recovery. For the sober-curious and recovery communities that form a key audience for zero-proof products, understanding that certified 0.0% drinks produce zero BAC change is an important reassurance — one that responsible brands communicate explicitly.

A counterintuitive finding from pharmacology: the rate of BAC rise depends heavily on gastric emptying speed, meaning food, stress, and even carbonation (which accelerates gastric emptying and thus BAC rise) affect how quickly the same amount of alcohol affects any individual — underscoring why 'standard drink' guidelines are approximations, not precise predictions.
